Sète is in the Herault department in Languedoc-Roussillon, in southern France. It is a port and Popular seaside resort known as the Venice of Languedoc.

It lies south east of an enclosed sea water lake that is used to harvest oyster and mussels, called the Bassin de Thau. The canal that runs through the area was dug in 1666 and is known alternatively as the canal of Sète, or the Canal Royal.

The St Louis Breakwater, built in 1666 is a 650-metre long pier and was the first stage of the port’s construction. The pier protects the port and has been sheltering boats since the 17th century. With the completion of the canal in 1681, the initial village began to expand.

The fishing port is the heart of the town. Pointe Courte is the old fisherman’s quarter. Visitors enjoy watching the fishermen unload their catch at the quays daily, from a flotilla of trawlers and tuna boats. Sète has wonderful restaurants serving delicious fresh seafood and local specialities.

Away from the waterfront, Mont Saint Clair, at a height of 183metres, is worth the climb to see the wonderful view of the whole area. Places to visit include the Chapelle Notre Dame de la Salette, and the sailor’s cemetery, La Cimitiere Marin.

Sète has interesting museums including; the Musee Valery, and the Musee International des Artes Modestes, while the Centre Regional d’Art Contemporain exhibits contempory art.

Many visitors come to Sète to see the water jousting. Water jousts are important events in Sète. The first tournament was held when the port was founded in 1666. In August during the Saint Louis festival, the water tournament takes place on the main canal.

Visitors are also attracted to Sète’s 12km of sandy beaches and the wide range of water activities on offer including sailing, and diving.
