Reims, in the Champagne-Ardenne region, lies 80 miles northeast of Paris. Founded by the Gauls it became a major city of the Roman Empire. It played a prominent role as the traditional site of the crowning of the Kings of France. The largest city in the region, it is regarded as the capital of the province of Champagne.

A small but attractive city, its long history is apparent in its churches, monuments and architecture. It is also one of the centers of champagne production. Many of the largest champagne producing houses, known as les grandes marques, have their headquarters in Reims, including Tattinger, Mumm, Piper-Heidsieck, Veuve Cliquot-Ponsardin and Ruinart. It has little traffic, designer shops, good restaurants and a lively night life.

The historic City of Reims is dominated by its magnificent Gothic cathedral, one of the finest in France and a UNESCO World Heritage sites. 32 French Kings have been crowned there.Other heritage sites are the Tau Palace, the Saint-Remi Basilica and the Saint-Remi Museum. The City also has a 3rd century Roman arch, an impressive Renaissance town hall, bishops' palace, theatre and museums.

The Place Drouet d'Erlon in the city centre contains restaurants and bars. In summer people enjoy sitting outside the many cafés in the sunshine, and in December it has a charming Christmas market. While at night its bars and cafes buzz with life.

The main shopping district is located around the cathedral and the nearby streets of the rue de Vesle, the cours Langlet, and place Drouet d'Erlon. There’s also a selection of French chains in the city centre, including Galeries Lafayette.

Although not reknowned for its own regional cuisine you can find all types of French cuisine in the city’s restaurants, and being close to Belgium, you’ll find plenty of Flemish dishes on the menu too.
