Located on the north banks of the Seine River, Paris is the capital of France and is an important world city in terms of business, culture, and tourism. Although Paris is a city it contains a village like atmosphere with cosmopolitan style that exemplifies contrast of the tiny alleys and street markets to the giant underground complexes of Montparnasse.

Tourism is an important part of the economy and the museums, cathedrals, and monuments of Paris are its most well known attractions. The Louvre is one of the worlds most visited museums and contains many famous works of art including the Mona Lisa and receives over 9 million visitors each year. Another main attraction in Paris is the Notre Dame Cathedral which receives over 12 million visitors each year.

The Eiffel Tower is the most famous monument and landmark which people often associate with being in the city of Paris.

Most of the local establishments have grown into a caricature of French culture which caters to the flavors and anticipations of tourist investment. Travelers are attracted to the classic sights like the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe as well as the beautiful gardens and grand boulevards such as the Champs-Elysees. Tourists also enjoy the wide array of festivals that occur throughout the year which include Fête des Rois, Banlieues Bleus International Jazz Festival, Fête du Travail around the Bastille, and the famous Tour de France cyclist competition, to name a few of the many festivals.

A major percentage of Paris'economy consists of corporate headquarters for financial institutions. The remaining percentage of the economy consists of small family owned businesses and specialty shops offering luxury items such as perfumes, jewelry, and other high end goods. There are additional industries that are located in the suburbs which include book publishing, industry manufacturing, and railroad stock. Paris is also the center of barge and ship routing and is the home of a major port for importing and exporting on the Seine River.
