Pantin is a northeastern and densly populated suburb of Paris, located only 6.4 km from the centre.

The name Pantin, then Pentini, was recorded for the first time in 1067. It is thought that this ancient name for Pantin derives from the Roman patronym Pentinus.

Pantin is divided into two cantons, Pantin East and Pantin West. Pantin lies longside the Canal de L’Ourcq. The Canal side is a charming area popular with the towns inhabitants and visitors, who enjoy the pleasant walks along the canal banks, the cycle paths and boat rides to take a leisurely view of the countryside.

Pantin was a major industrial area during the industrial revolution and this can be seen around the town. Pantin is a good example of a well preserved 19th century suburb. It still retains many small workshops around the rue Hoche and Avenue Jean Lolive, which were established in the town from the beginning of the industrial revolution.

One of the towns’ heritage sites is currently undergoing a transformation. Since 1884 The Great Mills of Pantin have stood proudly at the gates of Paris. This industrial heritage site is one of France’s most spectacular, and whilst The Mills of Pantin are being converted into modern offices the architect is working hard to preserve its historic features.

Pantin today is still an industrial town, manufacturing flour, processed foods, chemicals, foundry products, and cigarettes. There also remains considerable timber trade through the Canal.

Sites of historic interest include: The Eglise Saint-Germain L’Auxerrois, listed as a historic monument, built during the 17th century, and the Cemetery with commonwealth war graves.

The Salon d’ Honneur is a popular venue and hosts Classical and Baroque concerts throughout the year.

The town has good hotels and a variety of bars and restaurants to suit all tastes. It has large and small shops and has one of the regions most colourful markets located near the Rue Hoche. It also has a large and popular flea market in October.
