Nancy is a city in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department in north-eastern France. It was formerly the capital of the Duchy of Lorraine. It later became the French province of Lorraine.

The earliest signs of human settlement in the area date back to 800 BC. It is the site of a small small fortified town named Nanciacum. This was believed to have been built by Gerard, Duke of Lorraine around 1050.

Nancy is an elegant, refined and stylish town. It has the name "Capitale de l'Est" because of it’s reputation for fine art and architecture. The old city centre dates from the Middle Ages through to the 18th century. The Cathedral of Nancy is a fine example of 18th century architecture.

The Dukes of Lorraine and Stanislas, the dethroned King of Poland, were influencial in transforming large parts of the city. Place Stanislas is a beautiful and perfectly proportioned square. It has fountains and statues including that of Neptune. At the turn of the century the prominent glassmaker Emile Galle - the father of the Art Nouveau movement in France, further influenced the stylish development of modern Nancy with the addition of Art Nouveau features. Elaborate Art Nouveau grillwork and stained-glass seen in abundance around the town is a classic example of this movement.

In addition attractions to see include, Place de la Carrière, and Place d'Alliance, which are World Heritage Sites.

Nancy also posseses fine museums including the Musee de l’Ecole de Nancy, the Musée des Beaux-Arts and the Musée Lorrain.

At the centre of this area is the Parc Regional de Lorraine with red-tiled houses, vineyards, forests, marshes and lakes. This is the place to sample the traditional cuisine of 'Quiche Lorraine' and 'Potee Lorraine', a bacon casserole.

Visitors should also taste Bergamotes de Nancy - a boiled sweet made with the same bergamot used to flavour Earl Grey tea peculiar to this area.
