The town of Lorient is located in western France in the Brittany region and is part of the Morhiban department. Lorient is situated on the right bank of the Scorff River on an inlet of the Bay of Biscay and is considered a commercial and naval port for local industries. Lorient has a population of over 80,000 inhabitants and the primary industries include shipbuilding, fishing, electronics, and the production of car parts.

Lorient was established in 1666 by Jean-Baptiste Colbert who was the chief minister to Louis XIV. The town was originally known as a naval base and became a primary naval shipyard in France by the year 1815. Lorient became a base for submarines during World War II until it was destroyed and then rebuilt.

For history enthusiasts, one of the main attractions in Lorient is the submarine pens from World War II along with a few of the interesting buildings that survived the town’s destruction during the war. There is also a wealth of history on the area that is available through museums and the tourist information centre.

Lorient is also known for its beautiful countryside which visitors can enjoy as a wonderful resource for relaxation. The River Blavet which winds through the region provides beautiful pathways and open trailways that offer relaxing hikes or bike rides through the Quistinic region.

People often take weekend retreats to Lorient to enjoy its beautiful sandy beaches which are perfect for swimming, sailing, and fishing. Every year is also the Lorient Festival which celebrates the Celtic heritage during the month of August.

For those with an interest in theatre there is the Plateau des Quatre Vents which is one of the more exciting places in Lorient to take in theatre events where many emerging talents in the field get their start in the performance business.
