Dijon is one of the most beautiful cities in France. It was once the capital of the Duchy of Burgundy and is now the capital of the Cote d’Or and the Bourgogne region.

It can be traced to the Roman era, when it was a Roman settlement. From the early 11th century to the late 1400s it was home to the Dukes of Burgundy. Dijon was wealthy, powerful and influencial and was known as a centre for art, learning and science.

Although best known for its mustard, Dijon has some of the best wine country in the world. It has many well respected vineyards producing wines such as Vosne-Romanee and Gevrey Chambertain within 20 minutes of the city centre.

In Dijon architectural styles from the past thousand years can be seen including Capetian, Gothis and Renaissance.

Dijon’s medieval centre is one of the best examples in France. Around the Palace are pedestrian streets notably the rue des Forges, rue de la Chouette and the Place Francois Rude, which are lined with impressive medieval and renaissance houses, while the Place de la Liberation is a superb crescent of 17th century houses. In the city’s central district there are houses dating from the 18th century, still inhabited today.

Notable churches include Notre-Dame , St Michel, and the Cathedral St Benigne. The Ducal Palace, has a fascinating museum, the Musée des Beaux-Arts, which contains treasures and art that was the property of the Dukes of Burgundy. This area is deserved known for its’gastronomy and Dijon is home to some of the finest French cuisine including Boeuf Bourguignon, Coq au vin, Gougere and Pain d’epices. You can sample some of France's finest cuisine and drink great Burgundy wines at dinner at one of the many wine bars or restaurants in town.

Dijon holds its International and Gastronomic Fair every year in autumn. It ranks amongst the top ten most important fairs in France and attracts over 500 exhibitors and 200,000 visitors each year.
