The town of Beauvais is located in northern France and is the capital of the Oise department. It is an early Roman town from the Middle Ages with a population of over 60,000 inhabitants and is known for the manufacturing of textiles and musical instruments.

Beauvais was a primary location for the manufacturing of tapestry during the 17th century until the tapestry industry declined during the 19th century and was eventually destroyed during World War II. The tapestries were created for the wealthy bourgeoisie and nobility of France and also for exporting to other parts of the world.

A few of the primary attractions in Beauvais include the Beavais cathedral which is constructed in an impressive Gothic style with fine stained glass windows and original wooden doors. The cathedral was one of the highest in France until the great tower fell which halted the construction. There is also the quaint Carolingian cathedral which contains interesting Gothic architecture and artistic sculptures.

Beauvais is much like Amiens due to its partial demise during the war which has created a rather drab appearance to the town. However there are a few sites such as the Galerie Nationale de Tapisserie which is a museum displaying exquisite tapestries for which Beauvais was once well known. There are also a few magnificent clocks one of which displays the Archangel Michel assisting with the weighing of souls at the Last Judgement.

Visitors can also explore the Musee Departemental which contains interesting paintings along with an array of local history and archaeology as well as the interesting statue of Jeanne Hachette in the town square. Jeanne Hachette defended the town in 1472 against the Duke of Burgundy.

Beauvais is a little more than an hour by train from the city of Paris and is within a short distance to the Paris-Beauvais airport which is used by small airlines from northern Europe and the British Isles.
