Évreux

Évreux
The commune of Évreux lies in northern France, and is located in the region of Upper-Normandy. It falls under the department of Eure and serves as its capital. Évreux is also a constituent commune in the Arrondissement of Évreux, which consists of 280 communes and 18 cantons.

Évreux is a charming town situated on a valley neighboring the River Iton. The river navigates through the town and gives way to beautiful public gardens that lie south of Évreux.

The history of Évreux dates back to the Gallo-Roman era. The town’s presence was first recorded during the transition of the classical period into the medieval ages. Évreux was originally called ‘Mediolanum Aulercorum’, meaning ‘the chief town of the Gauls’. The current name of the town is supposed to have been inspired by ‘Eburovices’, also a Gaulish word.

Évreux holds a significant position in the map of France because of its rich ecclesiastical history. It houses the Cathedral of Évreux founded by Saint Taurin, the construction of which started as far back as the 11th century. Ever since its completion, the Cathedral of Évreux has been the seat of many important bishops.

Different parts of the Évreux Cathedral were completed during different time periods, and thus bear varied cultural influences. The western part of the façade, for instance, dates back to the Renaissance period, while the central tower is reflective of the 15th century, which is when it was constructed. The cathedral as a whole is noted for its use of rose windows and stained glass.

Évreux is also home to the Le Vieil-Évreux, a religious sanctuary dating back to the Gallo-Roman times. At this ancient site, the remnants of a palace, bath and Roman theater have been found. The popular relic of Jupiter originally found here is now displayed at the local museum.
