Dunkerque
The town of Dunkerque is located in northern France on the North Sea in the Nord department. Dunkerque has a population of over 75,000 inhabitants and is known as a center for the manufacturing of steel and shipbuilding. Other industries in the town of Dunkerque include oil refining, food processing, and manufacturing of electrical equipment.

Dunkerque is also known as a primary French port with the chief exporting products consisting of construction materials, steel products, cement, and pre-fabricated buildings. It also has a ferry service that runs from Dunkerque port built during the 8th century to Ramsgate and Dover, England.

Dunkerque was established during the 7th century and was governed by the Burgundians and the Spanish as part of Flanders until 1658 when it was taken over by the British and the French. The following year Dunkerque was awarded to England and then finally sold to France in 1662. By the 1700s the fortifications were destroyed and then later restored during the 18th century.

Dunkerque offers a few interesting attractions which include the Memorial du Souvenir which is a museum that offers displays and information related to the battle for Dunkerque and Operation Dynamo of 1940. For the cultural enthusiasts you can visit the Musee des Beaux-Art which features fine art consisting of notable paintings of the Flemish and Dutch from the 16th and 17th century.

Dunkerque also has a lovely town centre that was recently renovated which contains a wide variety of boutiques and specialty shops and maritime museums. The project is part of a planning project known as Neptune which also offers a host of sporting activities. The town also has 700 hectare of dunes and 15 kilometres of beautiful sandy beaches. Dunkerque has an interesting architectural heritage to explore and is known as an area for old traditions and culture.
