The small, quaint town of
Clamart is situated in the southwestern fringes of bustling
Paris and is located nearly nine kilometers from the heart of the city. It falls under the region of
Ile-de-France and is a part of the district of Hauts-de-Seine.
Clamart belongs to the Arrondissement of
Antony that has a total of 12 cantons and 12 communes within its political boundary.
The town of
Clamart is divided into two regions- namely, ‘Petit Clamart’ which is the part of town that was developed mid-20th century when urbanization was taking place. ‘Bas Clamart’ is the old part of town and contains several remnants from the past. Both regions combined have a total population of approximately 53, 000 people.
The most important sight of attraction in
Clamart is the town hall popularly known as ‘Mairie de Clamart’. The Foundation Arp museum is another monument one must not miss while visiting
Clamart. As the name suggests, the museum was established as a dedication to Jean Arp, the famous sculptor and abstract artist. The museum mostly features his works of art.
Clamart is also noted for being the temporary residence of Henry Matisse, the famed French artist.
The local Hôpital d'instruction des armées Percy became ‘famous’ in its own right after Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat passed away here in 2004.
Clamart was also one of the places in which there was an assassination attempt on then French statesman Charles De Gaulle in 1962.
The beautiful church dedicated to Saint Joseph is also well worth a visit when one is visiting the town. When in
Clamart, one of the nearest places to visit is
Paris and its numerous popular sights. The Louvre Museum is a must-visit, with a vast range of exhibits dating back to major historical periods. Amongst them, the most famous is that of the painting of Mona Lisa, which is featured amongst paintings created during the Renaissance period dating back to the 15th and 17th centuries.
