Charleville-Mézières

Charleville-Mézières
Located in the northern part of France, Charleville-Mézières is part of the region of Champagne-Ardenne. It falls under the department of Ardennes, one of the original departments established during the French revolution. The town of Charleville-Mézières runs along the bank of the River Meuse.

Though the political identity of this beautiful French city was established only in 1966, its history goes back many centuries. Charleville-Mézières was created by brining together the two separate towns of Charleville and Mézières. At the time of this ‘merger’, Charleville had its roots in the Classical ages, while Mézières was in existence since the medieval times.

Charleville-Mézières has a population of more than 60,000 people. The town also heads an Arrondissement of the same name, and has a total of 160 communes and 17 cantons.

The popularity of Charleville-Mézières has risen significantly over the decades, predominantly because of its magnificent scenic beauty. Charleville-Mézières is a beauteous, breathtaking combination of lush forests and valleys. It serves as a brilliant spot for nature lovers to explore the surroundings, without much interference, free from the headaches often associated with city life.

There are a variety of interesting attractions in Charleville-Mézières. The heart of the city is called Place Ducale. Constructed on the lines of renewed urban planning, Place Ducale was erected by none other than the royal architects of Louis XII. In appearance, Place Ducale resonates the feel of Place des Vosges situated in Paris.

One of the many old structures in Charleville-Mézières that is worth a watch is the Notre Dame de l’Esperance, a church built in true Gothic style. Musee Rimbaud is a museum dedicated to the great poet Arthur Rimbaud who was born in Charleville-Mézières. Located in the north of this town, the museum houses an old mill and also displays Rimbaud’s manuscripts and photographs.
