Chambéry is a city of south eastern France. It is located in the department of Savoie, in the
Rhône-Alpes region. It is an attractive town close to some of the best Ski resorts in Europe.
It is the capital of the department and has a long history. Since the 13th century it has been the historical capital of the Savoy region.
Chambéry sits on the crossroads of routes through
Burgundy, Switzerland, and Italy. It lies in the valley of the Leysse River surrounded by the Bauges and the Chartreuse Mountains. It descends from the slopes of the vineyards of the Combe de Savoie down to the shores of the largest natural Lake in France, the Lac de Bourget.
Chambéry has a pleasing mix of medieval streets, sites of historic interest and Grand Italien architecture. Dominated by the castle of the Dukes of Savoy this fascinating town is full of interesting old streets and historic buildings.
Built in 1838 the Fontaine des Elephants is a famous landmark and has become one of the towns best known symbols.
The Cistercian Abbey of Hautecombe, was built in 1135. The rulers of the House of Savoy are buried here. The Sainte- Chapelle is another place that attracts visitors. It was built to house the Holy Shroud with its reputed image of the face of Christ.
There are five excellent museums in
Chambéry including the Musee Savoisien which details the history of Savoie from the Bronze Age.
The rue de la Croix-d’Or has lovely restaurants and is the location of the Italienate Theatre. For relaxing and enjoying the regions food and drinks visit the Place St-Leger which has bars, cafes and good restaurants. In the summer street musicians perform in this area.
