Cannes

Cannes
The city of Cannes is one of the most well-known cities of France, and is part of the much-sought after French Riviera region that attracts millions of tourists all year around.

The history of Cannes dates back to the 2nd century BC, but not much of its present state was existent before the 10th century AD. At this time, this region had a small town with the name ‘Canua’. The name may have possibly originated from the word ‘canna’, which when translated into English, means ‘reed’.

The city of Cannes has a population of more than 70,000 people. The weather in the city is warm during summers, hitting temperatures as high as 30 degrees. Winters here are usually mild, and temperatures may drop below 10 degrees.

Over the years, Cannes gradually metamorphosed into a breathtaking city. After Baron Henry Brougham became a patron and started contributing to the city’s development, the English aristocracy began to pour in. By the 20th century, the city had the best hotels and was considered a plush destination. Schools came up and so did sports centers. Ever since, the city has never looked back.

Today, there are several places of attraction in this French city. The La Croisette area offers a beautiful waterfront view and is lined with palm trees. One can find the best of eateries and hangout spots in La Croisette.

The city of Cannes is known to house some of the most famous museums in France. These include the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire de Provence, Musée de la Castre, Musée de la Mer, and Musée International de la Parfumerie.

Cannes is perhaps best known for being home to the famous Cannes International Film Festival. Other festivals held here include Le Festival d’Art Pyrotechnique, a yearly fireworks competition held during summer, and Marché International du Disque et de l'Edition Musicale, the world’s most famous trade fair held in tribute to the music industry.
