The city of Bourges is located in central France along the Yevre River and is the capital of the Cher department. Bourges was founded over 2000 years ago by Bituriges and currently has a population of over 100,000 inhabitants. During the 1400s Bourges was the capital of the Kingdom of France and has had many different periods of Roman decree. The town is considered a university town with over 700,000 visitors each year.

Bourges is known for the impressive Gothic Cathedral of Saint-Etienne which took 60 years to build and has been named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The cathedral has beautiful glass art windows from the 13th century and splendid French gothic architecture. Another popular tourist attraction is the Palace of Jacques Coeur which was constructed during the 1400s and offers guided tours on a regular basis.

Bourges also has an interesting city architecture consisting of old stone houses, ancient ruins of city walls, mansions of grandeur, and the beautiful Renaissance church of Notre-Dame. A few of the old mansions are home to impressive museums such as the Maurice Estéve Museum which is located in the Palais des Echevins and offers an exquisite collection of modern paintings and graphic art. Nearby is the Musée du Berry which located in the Renaissance Hotel Cujas and offers interesting prehistoric and Roman artifacts in addition to folk art and notable paintings.

For outdoor enthusiasts you can visit the Marais which consists of beautiful canals and gardens offering a place to enjoy boating as well as the picturesque landscape. When you are finished exploring the beautiful outdoors of the Marais you can partake in a shopping spree along Rue Moyenne in the city centre. Bourges is also well known for Le Printemps de Bourges which is a famous international music festival that takes place every year.
